PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED
Yet again another tragic attack...
My deepest sympathy goes out to all the families of which any attack has happend I feel that no dog should be trusted 100% with any child and should not be left alone with children. A dog of any breed be it large or small is capable of nipping/bitting if prevoked or trained in such a manner, but unfortunatly these insidents dont get published like they do for a larger breed i.e bull breeds or rottweilers. I myself have 2   staffies and 2 children, and know many people in the same situation, and have never had any cause for concern with my dogs around the children or other people but i have also taught my children to respect the dogs and the dogs will respect them(if the dog is asleep leave them alone not to just walk up   so not to startle them) as remember these animals do not have voices like us we can warm people when we are getting peed off and shout, dogs dont have voices and sometimes the only way it feels to protect itself is to give a warming nip (meaning no real harm). It just annoyes me that some people are too quick to judge a breed with out actually researching it. I get stopped all the time and asked is your dog a pit and have also had the police at my door because it was reported i had a pitbull i am not the only person i know this has happend to police also took off a friends daughters door because of this same reason   i can understand peoples concern and i do have children ,and in the vet the other day a lady approched me with her hamster   and said its a staff aint it there on that list aint they and i told her to go and read the dangerous dogs act   Any dog NO MATTER WHICH BREED can and would cause serious or fatal harm to some-one if it has been brought up in the wrong hands. I think people need to read books and research these breed dogs before labeling them..A loving family dog will love you and be loyal to its family it does not make it a monster...
THERE HAS BEEN AN UP RISE IN DOG ATTACKS, AND AT THE END OF THE DAY THE DOGS ARE GETTING THE BLAME,AND IT IS THE IRASPONSIBLE OWNERS THAT NEED TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON.

DOGS WHERE WILD ANIMALS BEFORE WE TAUGHT THEM TO BECOME PETS SO AT THE END DAY THEY HAVE STILL GOT ANIMAL INSTICNTS.

90% OF DOGS ARE PUT IN THE RIGHT HANDS, AND ARE TAUGHT VERY WELL, AND ARE DEEPLY LOVED BY EVERYONE.
ITS JUST THAT OTHER 10% OF SMALL MINDED PEOPLE THAT TEACH THE DOGS FIGHTING AND SHOW THEM IT IS OK TO SHOW AGGRESION TO ANYING KIDS, ADULTS AND OTHER ANIMALS.

I THINK INSTEAD OF PUNISHING ALL THE BREEDS THAT HAVE BEEN LINKED TO THIS, IT IS US THAT NEED THE TRAINING TO SHOW US WHAT AN ANIMAL IS CAPABLE OF AND HOW TO PROPLEY CARE FOR ONE.

MY HEART TO ALL KIDS AND ADULTS WHO HAVE HAD TO SUFFER A DOG ATTACK, ITS NOT NICE I HAVE BEEN THROUGH IT.

ALL THESE DOGS NEED IS TO BE PUT IN THE RIGHT HANDS, LOVED AND CARED FOR AND THEY WILL BE YOUR CANINE COMPANION FOR A LONG TIME.

I THINK THEY SHOULD START A RESPONSIBLE OWNERS TRAINING CLASS AND YOU HAVE TO PASS THIS CLASS TO BE ABLE TO OWN A DOG, I KNOW I WOULDNT MIND DOING ONE AS I FEEL VERY DEEPLY ABOUT ALL DOGS AND KNOW WHAT HAPPINESS THEY BRING YOU.

I THINK ANYONE THAT OWNS A DOG WITHOUT THIS CERTIFICATE WILL BE FACED WITH A SERIOUS FINE OR PRISON.

STATEMENT BY JEREMY CLARKSON
" THERE SHOULD BE AN AMANISTY AGAINIST THESES DANGEROUS DOGS SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE YOUR DOGS TO THE POLICE, SO THEY CAN SEND THEM OFF TO BURNT AND MADE INTO HATS AND GLOVES.

THIS STATEMENT WAS IN THE SUN NEWSPAPER, PEOPLE LIKE THIS MAKE ME SICK.

ANYWAY ENOUGH OF MY VIEWS I HAVE LOTS I COULD GO ON FOR AGES. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR FEWS THE MORE SUPPORT FOR THESES DOGS THE BETTER.

Children should not be left unsupervised with dogs, say experts - get key advice on preventing injuries and have your say

Children should not be left unsupervised to play with a dog, say experts in this week's BMJ.

Their advice is part of a review aimed at doctors who deal with dog bites.

Dog bites and maulings are a worldwide problem, particularly in children, write Marina Morgan and John Palmer.

Dangerous dogs

    * Every year 250,000 people who have been bitten by dogs attend minor injuries and emergency units in the United Kingdom
    * Half of all children are reportedly bitten by dogs at some time - boys more than girls
    * Accurate death figures are difficult to obtain, but in the past five years, two to three cases a year have made news headlines

Advert: article continues below ∨

The report follows the death of five-year-old Ellie Lawrenson, who was mauled by a pit bull terrier at New Year. That incident left people asking ''How many more children must die?''

Prevention

In terms of prevention, they suggest that children should be taught:

    * to treat dogs with respect, avoid direct eye contact and to not tease them.
    * not to approach an unfamiliar dog; play with any dog unless under close supervision; run or scream in the presence of a dog; pet a dog without first letting it sniff you; or disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies.

Owners' responsibilities

Dog owners also need to change their behaviour, writes Rachel Besser, a children's doctor and lifetime dog owner, in an accompanying article.

It is clear that not all dog owners appreciate that children should not be left unsupervised with a dog, she says.

Just as some parents are obliged to take parenting classes, she would like to see equivalent mandatory classes for expectant dog owners to teach them about the responsibilities of dog ownership.

What the law says - Dangerous dogs

Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 prohibits four types of dog:

    * Pit Bull Terrier
    * Japanese tosa
    * Dogo Argentino
    * Fila Brasileiro

It is an offence to own or keep any of the above types of dog, unless it is on the Index of Exempted Dogs and is in compliance with the requirements.

In any event it is an offence to breed from, sell or exchange (even as a gift) such a dog, irrespective of whether it has been placed on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

The 1991 Act was amended by the Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Act 1997. This removed the mandatory destruction order provisions of the 1991 Act by giving the courts discretion on sentencing, and re-opened the Index of Exempted Dogs for those prohibited dogs which the courts consider would not pose a risk to the public.

Only courts can direct that a dog can be placed on the list of exempted dogs.

Tough treatment

Animal behaviourist Dr Roger Mugford specialises in the treatment of behaviour problems in pets. He believes that the current law doesn't help public safety and that the rules on dangerous dogs should be extended to private places as well as public places, as most dog attacks occur in the home with people the dog knows.

Dr Mumford says that dogs that have attacked people must not be killed immediately. Dogs are the evidence and need to be examined and observed to understand how the attack has occurred.

He insists that the answer is education about handling dangerous dogs and for people to use their common sense.

    * Any type of dog or cat should not be left with babies and children without adult supervision.
    * People should stop keeping dogs as weapons and should show them love and care. Dogs can be far more dangerous than guns if treated in the wrong way.

Do send us your views. Are dogs just too dangerous to be left around with small children? Or is this report off the mark?

SAVE THE STAFFYS IN UK!!   PLEASE HELP!!
Please help the Staffordshire bull terrier from being classed as a dangerous dog, Below is a direct link to No 10 Downing St petitions by email.

If the bill becomes a legislation the Staffy along with others will be classed as a dangerous dog and will be made to be muzzled in public and never be allowed off the lead, but the worst thing is they will be castrated/spayed and have a serial number tattooed on them like the Pitbull in the early 90s.

If irresponsibly raised, trained and supervised, any dog - from pekinese to poodle to pit bull - is capable of causing harm. If any dog is truly dangerous, it's every owner who should bear sole responsible for the consequences of their lack of care. It's time to look to the other end of the lead.

So please help Boycie and others like him by signing this petition against making Staffys a dangerous dog,thankyou.
