Weaning:
Around three to four weeks of age the pups will be ready to start weaning. The pups first teeth will appear by the second to third week. The bitch will naturally know its time to start weaning her pups and will not let them suckle as much. She will begin to regurgitate partically digested mushy meals for her pups. I always offer mushy food and put the bitch away from the pups for about an hour before i offer them food. I smear some food onto their lips using my finger so that they get a taste of it. This process can be quite messy as the pups will lay in the food and walk through it. Always make sure that the pups have fresh water in a shallow saucer like dish. I feed my pups four times a day:
12 noon, minced beef and gravy or puppy pedigree meat with small bite mixer.
4 pm, repeat 8 am meal.
8 pm, repeat 12 noon meal.
By now the pups will be spending alot of time out of the whelping box, so if the weather is good they should be allowed outside into a pen as the more excersise they have the more strenght they will gain. The mother would have stopped cleaning her pups now and they will be able to defecate and urinate without stimmulation. The mother will be teaching the pups to play now so you will notice the pups biteing each other wagging their tails and starting to find their voices.
